EVERYONE DESERVES ACCESS TO POOLS AND SAFE PLACES TO SWIM.
But we know this country has a history of excluding people of color and creating deliberate barriers to swimming due to fear rooted deeply in racism.
Accessible public pools are vital to the health of entire communities.
The Inequity in Swimming Access
- More than one-third (36.8%) of Black adults reported that they do not know how to swim, compared with 15% of all adults. — CDC
- Black children ages 10-14 drown in swimming pools at a rate almost 8 times higher than White children. — CDC
- 79% of children in families with incomes under $50,000 have no or low swimming experience. — USA Swimming
