Thomas Spann Wellness Council Program Overview
The Thomas Spann Wellness Council Program is rooted in equity, healing, and holistic wellness, offering inclusive spaces where individuals of all backgrounds can grow, connect, and thrive. From beginner wellness seekers to seasoned professionals, the program promotes access to aquatic and fitness opportunities through community partnerships, mindful training, and culturally responsive programming. Central to this is Blue-Mindfulness Training, developed by Thaddeus Gamory, which blends trauma-informed, anxiety-sensitive, and restorative justice approaches to swimming and healing. These experiences support emotional recovery, self-confidence, and physical well-being. The Council empowers individuals to heal, explore, and transform through the water, cultivating wellness and belonging in every drop.

Julia Lewis-Spann
Chair
Chair of the program, Julia Lewis-Spann, is a respected community leader and advocate for health and wellness. With a background in public health and her work with the Center for Mind and Body, she champions holistic approaches to student well-being. She leads initiatives to strengthen infrastructure, foster partnerships, and empower student involvement in aquatics.
Thaddeus Gamory
Co-Chair
Co-Chair Thaddeus Gamory created the Blue-Mindfulness concept, blending trauma-informed swim instruction with cultural sensitivity. His transformative approach builds confidence, promotes healing, and opens pathways to aquatic careers for diverse communities.

The BlueMindfulness Institute delivers culturally responsive, trauma-informed aquatic programs that promote healing, empowerment, and connection. Through its signature BlueMindfulnessâ„¢ approach, the Institute offers holistic, inclusive water-based experiences for individuals and families to build a safe, confident, and meaningful relationship with water.
