Our Key Advocacy Campaigns

Advocacy and awareness campaigns are vital to reducing drowning’s disproportionate toll on marginalized communities by spotlighting cultural, economic, and accessibility barriers to water competency. By amplifying stories, resources, and policy recommendations, these initiatives empower families and local leaders to prioritize swim education, pool safety, and rescue readiness. They also challenge stereotypes and foster recruitment pathways—scholarships, mentorships, and targeted outreach—to diversify lifeguard, instructor, and aquatic management roles. As a convener and champion, Diversity In Aquatics leads these efforts by partnering with community groups, training Water Safety Ambassadors, and advocating for inclusive programming and infrastructure. In doing so, the organization not only saves lives but builds trust, equity, and resilience—ensuring every community can safely enjoy and benefit from aquatic environments.

Making a Difference in Our Communities

Since 2022, our campaigns have reached over 27,500 community members and helped in the rise of underserved populations towards becoming aquatic professionals.

We supported the relaunch of Texas Southern University's aquatic program—now serving 150 participants—and draws over 350 attendees annually to its Water Safety Festival.

We also established the inaugural HBCU Water Safety Instructor Academy at Bowie State University, certifying 25 new instructors

Trained several Health and PE teachers in partnership with SHAPE America and Baltimore City Schools.

Between 2022 and 2023, we engaged nearly 500 individuals through signature clubs and projects—from our Master's Swim & Triathlon Club to community initiatives in Buffalo to help address Trauma to also doing work in, the Bronx, Carrollton, and Hampton Roads areas.

In 2024, our footprint expanded internationally—from water safety festivals in Grenada (1,200 students and adults) to community events in Jacksonville and Houston (over 450 youth)—with total participation exceeding 10,500. Participants report a 95 % boost in water confidence, and partners praise our strengthened pipeline for diverse leadership.

Our work has been honored with multiple awards, including the American Red Cross (2020), USA Swimming Diversity Award (2017), NDPA DE&I Award (2021), AOAP Conference Partnership (2022), and Aquatic Today Outstanding Leadership Award (2023).
