Water Safety Festival
The Water Safety Festival is a signature annual event hosted by Diversity in Aquatics, dedicated to saving lives by teaching water safety and promoting inclusive access to aquatic fun. This vibrant community celebration brings together local organizations, businesses, and volunteers to offer free swim lessons, interactive safety demonstrations, and engaging water activities for all ages and skill levels. Families can explore hands-on stations that feature basic swimming skills, water-safe games, and demonstrations on using safety equipment. Designed for experienced and new swimmers, the festival creates a welcoming space where children and families learn to stay safe around water while enjoying aquatic recreation. POOL: A Social History of Segregation
Created by Victoria Prizzia
POOL is a compelling traveling exhibition that dives deep into the untold stories behind America’s public swimming pools. In the 20th century, pools served as vital spaces for joy, learning, and community—but they were also flashpoints in the fight for access, dignity, and belonging.
Drawing on groundbreaking scholarship, including Dr. Jeff Wiltse’s Contested Waters, POOL reveals how public pools both reflected and reinforced racial and economic divides. Through immersive storytelling, rich historical context, and artful design, the exhibition traces how policies of segregation and disinvestment contributed to today’s stark racial disparities in swim access and drowning rates—especially in Black communities.
More than a history lesson, POOL is a call to action. It challenges visitors to confront a painful legacy while imagining a more just, inclusive future—one where everyone can safely and equitably share the water.
